Frequently Asked Questions
-
What type of addictions are treated at EHN Edgewood Rockies? What if I have multiple addictive behaviours or concurrent mental health issues?
The dedicated clinical professionals at EHN Edgewood Rockies have designed a program that is both effective and specially tailored to address a diverse range of addiction challenges. Although we focus primarily on substance addictions (alcohol and drugs), our program can also address behavioural addictions such as gambling, sex and love addiction, as well as other dependencies.
Our program also recognizes that there are often concurrent mental health disorders that accompany addictions, such as depression, trauma, anxiety, and ADHD.
-
How does EHN Edgewood Rockies determine the best treatment approach?
Upon admission, a full evaluation is conducted using a biopsychosocial interview. If necessary, additional follow-up screenings or assessment tools (e.g., the Addiction Severity Index, Substance Abuse Subtle Screening Inventory) are used to further guide our evaluation process.
-
What methods of treatment are used at EHN Edgewood Rockies?
The intensive and comprehensive nature of our services sets EHN Edgewood Rockies apart.
Treatment is provided by fully trained professionals who work as a multidisciplinary team that follows a holistic approach. Because everyone experiences addiction differently, treatment is case-managed—each client is assigned a counsellor who ensures their specific recovery needs are met.
Our counsellors provide individual and group counselling, as well as psychoeducational sessions. Clients participate in seminars, classes on the nature of addiction, and complete self-reflective assignments. The program emphasizes relapse prevention, recovery strategies, balanced reintegration, and social support, while also encouraging engagement in work, physical activity, mindfulness, healthy eating, and appreciation for nature.
Evidence-based treatments and counselling techniques include:
- Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
- Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT)
- Abstinence-based approach with medication assistance therapy (if needed)
- Individual psychotherapy
- Group therapy
- Psychoeducational group sessions
- Mindfulness and physical exercise
- Relapse prevention groups
-
Do you have a family program?
Yes. Our Family Education Workshops take place virtually and provide a safe space for loved ones to learn effective strategies for understanding, managing, and coping with chronic illnesses. These sessions share general information that family members can apply where relevant.
-
What is the weather like at EHN Edgewood Rockies?
Located in the East Kootenay Valley, EHN Edgewood Rockies enjoys all four seasons with abundant sunshine. The region is relatively dry and sits at about 3,000 feet above sea level, offering mild winters, warm dry summers, and beautiful autumns and springs.
Each season brings unique charm—from cozy fireside reading in winter to blooming trails in spring and outdoor adventures year-round. The facility overlooks the Kimberley Alpine Ski Resort, and it’s even possible to ski and mountain bike in the same day.
-
Do I need a referral to access this program?
A referral is not required, but all potential clients must complete a comprehensive admissions application to ensure the program is the right fit. Intake staff may follow up for additional details or documentation, especially for clients with complex medical needs.
While a referral isn’t mandatory, we recommend obtaining one from a medical practitioner diagnosing addiction and recommending treatment or detox. This documentation is often useful for tax purposes. Upon discharge, EHN Edgewood Rockies provides receipts and a letter confirming attendance and costs.
-
How secure is the facility?
The facility is secure and protected by its remote location, though it is not a locked facility. Clients may not leave the property unless accompanied by staff, and unauthorized visitors are not permitted. This ensures client safety and program integrity.
All personnel adhere to strict confidentiality policies. Patients may meet one another but must sign agreements to respect everyone’s privacy.
-
Do patients need spending money?
A $750 pre-payment covers extra services such as massage, reiki, or store purchases. Any additional charges will be billed to the credit card on file.
For off-site purchases or services, clients should bring their own spending money. Cash advances are available with a 3% transaction fee. Secure storage is provided for valuables such as wallets and keys.
-
Do patients have a private room?
Accommodations include two-bedroom cabins and suites in the main lodge. While room assignments are made on a case-by-case basis, solo occupancy is discouraged to promote connection and reduce isolation. Suitemates may change during treatment.
-
Is drug testing done at EHN Edgewood Rockies?
Yes. Blood and urine testing are part of the program. Patients must consent to random testing during treatment. The use of drugs or alcohol is strictly prohibited and will result in immediate dismissal.
-
Can patients take prescribed medication while in treatment?
All medications must be pre-approved by an EHN Edgewood Rockies nurse in consultation with a physician. Medications are securely stored and administered under supervision. Clients may not personally possess any prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, or supplements during treatment.
-
Do patients have free time to themselves?
Yes. Clients are encouraged to engage in reflection, meditation, prayer, creative activities, exercise, or relaxation during designated free time.
The program structure is intentionally intensive yet balanced to provide the necessary support for healing, with opportunities for both personal time and social activities.
-
Is it a mixed-gender/co-ed program? Are there gender-specific sessions?
The program is inclusive and primarily co-ed, though certain group sessions are gender-specific for tailored support. Staff are sensitive to client comfort and maintain respectful boundaries.
EHN Edgewood Rockies intentionally mirrors real-world social environments to help clients transition successfully after treatment.
-
Should patients who don’t feel they have an addiction or were pressured into treatment enroll at EHN Edgewood Rockies?
Clients should be ready and willing to participate in recovery. Those entering only to satisfy others or without commitment to the process may not benefit fully.
EHN Edgewood Rockies emphasizes compassion, respect, and evidence-based therapy—not confrontational or aversion-based methods. Individuals seeking more aggressive treatment approaches may be better served elsewhere.
